Kaja Kallas – an inconvenient witness to the Russian rewriting of history

Audio Reading Time:

The appointment of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the first EU diplomat is dramatically irritating Moscow.

From Moscow’s point of view, Kaja Kallas is not an average civilian and politician, but someone who can influence European legislation and policy in relation to Russia’s version of history.

Russia sees Kaja Kallas’ new post as a significant challenge to the Kremlin's long-established and ongoing global fake news agenda, as her background and life story can easily contradict Russia’s historical and current mystifications.

Therefore, the Kremlin is furious about Kaja Kallas' appointment as Europe's chief diplomat. Not only is she a living witness and survivor of the Kremlin's deviation and aggression, but she also wields considerable political power.

The Kremlin loves to twist, bend, and rewrite Russian and global history to suit its current global interests. In doing so, it has never encountered any significant resistance from the global community.

For example, in Russian history textbooks, the Kremlin falsified details about the pact between Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany that led to Soviet Russia's occupation of Estonia, Kaja Kallas' homeland.

Unbearable myth-busting

The Kremlin views the new European chief diplomat as an enemy who, by citing her personal experiences of living and surviving in a USSR-occupied country, can easily debunk Russia's myths and fake news.

The global exposure of true Russian history and identity is unbearable for Moscow. The Kremlin knows how to recover from economic and military setbacks, but when the world finally discovers Russia's true identity and ideology, it will not be able to resurrect Russia as the world has known it for centuries.

For decades, the Kremlin has succeeded in concealing the true Russian identity

For decades, the Kremlin has succeeded in concealing the true Russian identity and erasing from the history books those episodes that exposed and compromised Russia.

This enabled Russia to continue its imperial and aggressive behaviour without encountering any significant resistance from the global community.

A dangerous witness

Kaja Kallas, 47, certainly remembers the joyful days when Estonia regained its freedom, and Moscow therefore sees her as an extremely dangerous witness to Russia's distorted version of reality.

Moscow is worried because Kaja Kallas has experienced almost the same horrors of the Russian occupation as the Ukrainians currently living in the Russian-occupied territories.

Therefore, her life story in relation to Russia is not an opinion but an undisputed background that clashes with the Kremlin’s version of reality.

European leaders tended to avoid confrontation with Russia, refusing to declare that Soviet Russia was indeed an occupier during and after the Second World War

Before Russia's aggression against Ukraine, not too many EU politicians were interested in challenging Russia’s fake news at the official and state level.

The end of accepting the Kremlin's version of history

Kaja Kallas’ family lived through 1940, when the Soviet army occupied Estonia on the basis of the agreement the Soviet Union had signed with Nazi Germany. Russian textbooks can erase this fact, but it remains etched in the memory of those who or whose relatives endured the Soviet Russia’s occupation.

For too long, European leaders have been willing to accept the Russian version of distorted history and reality - The Kremlin

Unfortunately for the Kremlin, Kaja Kallas possesses such a memory. She attended a Soviet secondary school. The curriculum for historical events was completely different from what it was in reality. Something similar is now happening in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

Russia has worked hard to subvert and recruit Kaja Kallas. The story of Kaja Kallas' husband's business transaction related to Russia bears a striking resemblance to the action that Russian intelligence facilitated.

Corruption has worked very well for Vladimir Putin and the Russian intelligence for decades. For too long, European leaders have been willing to accept the Russian version of distorted history and reality in exchange for favourable oil and gas prices for their countries, or worse, in exchange for more obvious bribery, which for some included high posts at leading Russian companies. However, Russia failed to achieve this with Kaja Kallas.
